Western Maine is beautiful. As is the northern part of New Hampshire. The smell of the pine trees is intoxicating. When we got into Vermont, you could smell the pine, but unfortunately it was mixed with the smell of cow manure. We had a really nice lunch, which is something I had not been doing. We also stopped for ice cream at one of the hundreds of ice cream shops scattered across Maine and New Hampshire.
In planning out our route, it looked like it would be an easy ride from Bangor to Lake Placid, New York, so at one of our stops I called and made a "non-refundable" reservation at the Best Western in Lake Placid. When we got to Burlington, Vermont we had missed the ferry across the lake to New York. I was not happy. After both Robert and I having conversations with the hotel we decided to find another route to get there...because they were going to charge us for the night no matter what. We had to drive up to Grand Isle and catch the ferry there over to New York. The drive once we got off the ferry down to Lake Place was amazing. It was in the mountains, with a river on the side of the road and people in the river fly fishing...very picturesque.
This is Robert and DeeDee behind me on this beautiful road.
We made it to our hotel at around 8:00 PM and walked next door for a very nice dinner. Our hotel rooms look out right across the street at the Olympic Village. It's a very cool spot and I'm glad we pushed through and made it here. I think we only did about 350 miles today, but it felt like many more...
Thanks for reading my post, please stay in touch, it's nice to hear from you.
Starting off our day, in front of Fort Knox, not the one with all the gold...and an Egg McMuffin.
You've got to love this sign!
My only new state of the day.
We were really tired...and we really don't like rules anyway.
On the ferry boat from Vermont to New York.
Still no "welcome to New York" sign, but at least proof that I was here!
Your Dad and I spent a great week in Lake Placid (he was working but we celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary there). We got a picnic basket from our hotel and rented a boat and floated in the middle of the lake where he gave me my Rolex. Very romantic. I have great memories there.
ReplyDeleteHave fun and be safe. Love, Mom

ReplyDeleteHello Tom, came into office and first thing went to the Blog site. You have been puttin' on some miles since I left the office Friday. All I did was drink beer over the holiday weekend. Actually, a couple of us rode up to Loose Wheels in Sherman and then over to High Pointe Marina for a bit. Seems like your trip going well with the exception of the toll booth episode by the GW Bridge.
Tony had his tests conducted at Mayo and returned Sat night to San Antonio only to be taken to the emergency room with 102 fever. Turns out he contracted pnemonia. Bet he is fed up with all of this. To date, no diagnosis. They don't seem to know what is causing the problems.
Weather here for the week to turn wet with two tropical depressions heading through. Today it is nice.
Have fun. Loved your "public housing' comment!

Greetings, Tom. So great to see the country with you. We're sorry that we weren't able to connect when you went through Yuck (your name for Atlanta). We're well off the beaten path (60 miles east of Atlanta, 15 miles from Athens) so it would have really added to your time on the road. However, no excuse next time you travel the states! We miss you and love you very much. We're praying for your safety, for relaxation, and for good weather. Your descriptions of the countryside, the cities, and the sights are awesome. When you were at the GW toll booth it brought back memories of eating at the basement Italian place in the Village and then about breaking the steering wheel on the rental car sitting in CT traffic trying to get back to Danny's wedding rehearsal...ahh, the memories. Thanks for being a forever friend! S&S
ReplyDeleteSteve, I was going to put that story into my blog because it is so vivid to me and when I was driving in CT all I could think about was that trip with you up the Meritt and seeing how frustrated you were. Actually, it was nice to see that you are actually human! Love to you and Susan.
ReplyDeleteTotally with you in spirit and prayer. Wish I was with you guys, smellin' those smells! Love you Tommy!
